As the United States moved into the 19 th century (1800 -1899), many changes were taking place.
One of these changes was in the amount of land the young country controlled.
In 1803, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. This became known as the Louisiana Purchase.
The Louisiana Purchase added around 828, 000 square miles to the United States.
In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition to explore the newly acquired land.
This expedition was called the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It lasted for over two years.

Even though the Revolutionary War ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, problems between Great Britain and the United States continued.
Great Britain, who was at war with France, tried to stop the U. S. from trading with France.
Great Britain was also kidnapping American sailors and forcing them to serve in the British navy.
The British were also giving military support to Native Americans who were fighting against American expansion into their lands.
Because of these problems, war broke out again between the United States and Great Britain. This would be known as the War of 1812.
The U. S. was at a disadvantage to the British because of the U. S. ’s lack of a navy. The U. S. needed warships built.
Erie, Pennsylvania, became an important shipbuilding town because of its access to the Great Lakes and the sheltered bay Presque Isle formed.
On September 10, 1813, the Battle of Lake Erie took place.
The American navy, led by Oliver Hazard Perry, defeated the British navy, which gave control of Lake Erie to the U. S. for the rest of the war.
The British were able to capture Washington, D. C. on August 24, 1814, and burned many government buildings, including the Capitol and the White House.
On September 13, 1814, the British tried to capture Baltimore, MD, an important port. Fort Mc. Henry withstood 25 hours of bombardment by the British navy.
On seeing the American flag above the fort after the bombardment, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called the Star Spangled Banner, that would go on to become the U. S. national anthem.
On December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed by British and American representatives, ending the War of 1812.
