Critical Thinking Activities THINK + SHARE BRAINSTORM 1. On your own, brainstorm 5 -6 words that you associate with the word government. 2. Share these with your partner. What do you have in common? What did only 1 of you have? 3. Together, make a wordcloud that combines your ideas together. (In a wordcloud, the most repeated or most important words are bigger. ) Brainstorm means you write down words, short phrases or partial ideas. Don’t stop to think too much or write long sentences. Short and snappy is best!

Once you are finished, craft a sentence using that term. 1. “Govern”: to officially lead or control a group of people. 2. “Government”: the system or structure that controls and makes decisions within a specific area (country, province, kingdom). 3. “Monarchy”: absolute rule; a form of government with a hereditary head of state 4. “Democracy”: a form of government where citizens vote for representatives 5. “Law”: the system of rules made and used by the government to encourage or prevent certain actions.

The key ideas are: • Health care? • People and groups of people have many needs. • Food? • Shelter? • Governments usually help their citizens attain certain basic individual needs. • Basic income? • Law and order? • Governments usually help the citizens as a whole. • Taxes? • Zoning? • The types of needs governments fulfill and how they • Rights and freedoms? do it vary between governments based on the beliefs • Religion? of the people in government and the culture of the • Equality? society.

Content Knowledge Activities DIFFERENT KINDS OF COURTS (HISTORICAL) • The court system is an important part of the government. • The court system is where people who have broken the law are dealt with. Different court systems have different rules, purposes and approaches to breaking the law. • There is one court system in Canada, with many parts to it. It follows the rules set by current and previous Canadian governments, these rules are in the form of laws. • In Europe in the Middle Ages, there were three different court systems. • Read pages (56 -58) in your text book and make a chart that compares the three charts on 3 -4 different characteristics. • Who is in charge? • What are the punishments? • What kind of offenses are dealt with here? • etc
