Acquaintance • Definition: An acquaintance is someone you know, but are not close friends with. • Example: Joe talked to his new acquaintance, Tony, in order to get to know him better. • Example: At her 10 th high school reunion, she met a lot of old acquaintances she hadn’t seen in years. • Ask: What is the difference between an acquaintance and a friend?
Cautiously • Definition: To do something cautiously means to do it with care. • Example: The woman slowly and cautiously walked on the suspension bridge in the forest. • Example: Eric gently and cautiously touched the owl’s feathers. • Ask: What is a synonym for cautiously? Examples include: carefully, warily…etc.
Scrounging • Definition: When someone is scrounging for something, he or she is trying to obtain or collect something with difficulty. • Example: Tina saw the cat scrounging through the overflowing trashcan. • Example: When he found his family’s old photo albums, he started scrounging them for more photos. • Ask: Describe what someone looks like scrounging through a backpack

Scornfully • Definition: If you say or do something scornfully, you say it or do it in a way that shows dislike or that you are making fun. • Example: The mother spoke scornfully to her son about his bad study habits. • Example: The kid scornfully rejected the offer to trade notebooks with her friend • Ask: When might you speak scornfully?
