Unit 3 Statistical Studies
Observational Study - study where data is gathered by observation techniques, surveys, or interviews. Experimental Study - study where participants are put into groups and one or more groups is given a treatment
Treatment - something given to a group to test the variable of interest. Variable of Interest - the concept or idea being studied
Control Group - a group that receives no treatment, or a placebo, that is used to compare to the group(s) that receive treatment.
Null Hypothesis - a statement that predicts the outcome of a study will be what the research question claims. Alternative Hypothesis - a statement that predicts the outcome of a study will be opposite of what the research question claims.
Population - the entirety of the subjects being studied.
Placebo - a type of treatment given that contains zero active ingredients. (ex. sugar pill) Placebo Effect - the participant(s) report improvement simply because they were a part of a study.
Primary Data - data that is collected first-hand by the researcher. Secondary Data - data that is collected or gathered that comes from internet sites, books, etc, and was collected by someone other that the researcher.
Pilot Study - a small scale study that identifies areas of concern before conducting a large scale study. Margin of Error - range of confidence that the researcher determines from data collected for a variable of interest.
Outlier - a piece of data that is vastly different than the majority of data collected.
