Tube and Netflix. – Podcasts from our favorite celebrities. – Graphic t-shirts made by companies such as Hollister that sells worldwide. – Popular plays such as Hamilton.
B. Popular culture often spreads through a combination of different types of diffusion. Describe how terms, such as those in the table, diffuse spatially through each of the following processes. ■ 1. Relocation diffusion ■ Terms in popular culture have often spread through the action of a person who uses the term moving to a new location and continuing to use the term. This would be a representation of relocation diffusion. ■ 2. Contagious diffusion ■ Terms in popular culture have often spread through the action of someone using the term and it catching on to those people in close proximity to them. This would be a representation of contagious diffusion. ■ 3. Hierarchical diffusion ■ Terms in popular culture have often spread through the action of a celebrity, such as a singer, using the new term in a hit song, then the listeners of the song starting to use the same term. This would be representation of hierarchical diffusion.

Age barriers such as older people being more resistant to new terms. Linguistic barriers such as slang not having a direct translation in another language. Religious barriers such as laws preventing a culture from using certain terms. Political barriers such as some countries having internet and/or media censorship. Ethnic culture barriers such as the desire to maintain distinctiveness and not adopt popular culture. ■ Social class barriers limiting access to certain forms of media. ■ Economic barriers limiting access to technology to learn the new terms.
