Unit 3: Photosynthesis and Respiration
PART 1: Photosynthesis § Photosynthesis: the process by which plants convert the energy of the sun into the energy in the chemical bonds of organic molecules such as carbohydrates (ex. sugars and starches)
WHO carries out Photosynthesis? § Plants, algae, and many single-celled organisms (bacteria) carry out photosynthesis
Energy Where does the energy come from that sustains all life? The Sun!! Photosynthesis is the connection between energy that is released from the sun (solar energy) and the energy available for living organisms (chemical energy).
Energy § All plants , algae and many singlecelled organisms use solar (sun) energy to convert inorganic molecules (Carbon Dioxide and water) into energy-rich organic compounds (glucose) § Remember… § Organic molecules- contains BOTH Hydrogen and Carbon atoms § Inorganic molecules- does NOT contain both Hydrogen and Carbon atoms; any other combination of atoms
Materials Used/Needed (reactant) § Carbon dioxide gas and water are used during photosynthesis § Both of these inorganic molecules come from the environment
Materials Produced/Made (products) One organic compound that is produced during photosynthesis is the sugar Glucose § § Glucose is a simple carbohydrate or simple sugar During photosynthesis water and carbon dioxide from the environment are combined to make glucose Photosynthesis makes Oxygen
Materials Produced § Oxygen gas is also formed during photosynthesis § The oxygen that is produced is then released into the environment
Photosynthesis Equation
WHEN does Photosynthesis happen? § Photosynthesis occurs in plant cells when light is available § Generally this is during the day time
WHERE does Photosynthesis happen? § Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells when they are exposed to light § Chloroplasts- green colored organelles that contain chlorophyll where photosynthesis occurs
WHY is Photosynthesis important? § Plant cells use the glucose produced from photosynthesis in 2 ways: § 1. Glucose is used to generate ATP during respiration where the glucose is broken down to release its stored energy § All organisms use organic food compounds (glucose) to supply the ATP energy they need to live
WHY is Photosynthesis important? § Plant cells use the glucose produced from photosynthesis in 2 ways: § 2. Glucose is used as a material for building more complex molecules that the plant needs
Relationship to Respiration § The energy stored in glucose during photosynthesis is transferred to the chemical bonds of ATP § All cells “run” on the energy released from ATP
What did you LEARN about Photosynthesis? • Photosynthesis- converts Light energy into Chemical Energy. • Photosynthesis produces: Glucose- an organic molecule, and Oxygen, a gas. • The materials used in photosynthesis or the reactants are: Water and Carbon Dioxide • ENERGY is STORED in the CHEMICAL BONDS of the glucose molecule – during
