UNIT 3 -7 FLUID TECHNOLOGY Mr. Brooks Foundations of Technology
Standard 5. 7 Examine and analyze open and closed fluid systems in terms of common components and basic design.
Clear Target You will be able to: Differentiate between hydraulic and pneumatic systems and provide examples of each.
Technology System A group of resources (subsystems) working together to solve problems or extend our human capabilities.
Two types of Fluid Systems Hydraulic system: a system that uses the properties of liquids (usually an oil-based product) to generate, transmit, and control power. Pneumatic system: a system that uses compressed gas to generate, transmit, and control power.
Hydraulic Systems Examples include: Vehicle lift Construction equipment Vehicle cooling system
Typical Hydraulic System Reservoir : Holds the hydraulic fluid Valve : Controls the fluid flow Pump: Supplies fluid under pressure to the system Cylinder: Uses pressurized fluid to do work Piston: The rod inside of a cylinder that moves back and forth
Pneumatic Systems Examples Include: Bicycle pump Medical and dental tools Mechanic tools
Typical Pneumatic System Compressor: Supplies pressurized air to the system. Reservoir tank: maintains a supply of air for the tools to use. Regulator: Controls the amount of air pressure in the system.
Open and Closed Systems Open system: a system that is not pressurized and relies on gravity as the force that moves the fluid. Example: aqueduct or a water wheel Closed system: a system that is pressurized and does not rely on gravity.
Pascal’s Law P= F / A Since the pressure in the system is the same throughout, the pressure in cylinder 1 = the pressure in cylinder 2. Therefore: F 1/A 1 =F 2/A 2
Practice # 1
Example # 2 You are working a log splitter. The input cylinder has an area of 3. 14 inches squared and you exert 20 pounds of force into the machine. If the output cylinder has a radius of 2 inches, how much force is being exerted on the output cylinder?
Assignment In your groups, you will go to www. grc. nasa. gov Once there, search for Pascal’s Law in the search box. Open Pascal’s Principles and Hydraulics. Read and do problems 1 -4
