EXAMPLE #1 USING A DIRECT QUOTE “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. ” –Thomas Jefferson, 1787 In 1787 Thomas Jefferson shared his thoughts regarding the free press in America. He reiterated, “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter” (“Independent Reading: Newspapers” 181). Jefferson announced his distaste for a government-run newspaper. His thoughts were that it is better to live in a country without a government if it meant we would have the right to have free press.

He explored the question of whether it was better to have a free press without the government being involved or whether it was better to have a country run by a government but without a free press (“Independent Reading: Newspapers” 181). He had an opportunity to share his proclamation in 1787 when he stated that a country runs better when it has a free press. What Jefferson decreed is that our country should not allow the government to be involved in its media affairs if the country desires complete freedom in it’s press
