ANNOUNCED Define: made something known officially. Example: Ms. Parks announced the winner of the contest. Ask: When has someone announced your name?
CANDIDATES Define: someone who tries to be elected. Example: Andrew is one of our four candidates for class president. Ask: What are some things candidates do before an election?
CONVINCE Define: to cause a person to believe. Example: Julia’s mother tried to convince her to play soccer. Ask: What is something someone tried to convince you to do?
DECISIONS Define: to make up one’s mind. Example: Nick made two decisions about what to eat for breakfast. Ask: Can you name a decision you make every day?
ELECT Define: choose someone by vote. Example: The students voted to elect a new class president. Ask: What is another word for elect?
ESTIMATE Define: guess. Example: Sam tried to estimate, or guess, the number of coins he had. Ask: What does it mean to estimate something?
GOVERNMENT Define: the group of people who manage a country or state. Example: Our government makes laws. Ask: Can you think of one law our government has made?
INDEPENDENT Define: you do not belong to a political party Example: It’s good to be independent and do things on your own. Ask: How can you be more independent at home?
