UNIT 2 VOCAB BODY SYSTEMS UNIT
CELLS Smallest unit of an organism that can perform life functions, basic unit of life.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Transports nutrients and oxygen to the body
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Breaks down food to provide nutrients and energy; gets rid of solid waste.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM Removes waste from the body, urinary system is part of the excretory system
MUSCULAR SYSTEM Provides movement of the body; consists of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles
NERVOUS SYSTEM Controls and coordinates the body’s activities; sends messages to and from the brain, spinal cord and nerves
NEURONS Nerve cell, carries messages between the brain and other parts of the body
ORGAN Structure in an organisms, made of two or more tissues which has a specific function
ORGANISM A living thing – consisting of a single cell or multiple cells
ORGAN SYSTEM A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions
PERISTALSIS Muscular contractions that move food through the digestive system
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide
SENSORY RECEPTORS A sensory nerve – has a nerve ending that responds to stimulation
SPECIALIZED CELLS Special cells in multicellular organisms that are modified to carry out a particular function
SYSTEM Interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a more complex whole
