Modal verbs: general introduction 二.情���的�法功能 We can use modal verbs to talk about: ability 能力 obligation 义务, 责任 certainty 确定 permission 允许 make 提出请求 requests make suggestions 提出建议 make 提供帮忙 offers give 提出忠告 advice

1. 情��� can, could和be able to的用法 ①表能力:can 表现在;could表过去 *我认为没有你的帮助他不能解决这 个问题。 I don't think he can solve the problem without your help. *两年前Rose就能自己烧饭了。 Rose could cook meals for herself two years ago.
②在疑问句中“must”表示“必须”的回答形式 肯定 must 否定 needn’t或don’t have to 没必要 E. g: ---Must you go home now? (必须) ---Yes, I must. / No, I needn’t. =I don’t have to.
[Practice] *你现在一定困了。 You must be sleepy now. *他昨晚一定看足球比赛了。 He must have watched the football match last night. *你现在一定困了, 不是吗? You must be sleepy now, aren’t you?
(2)表“猜测”时, “may, might”能用于陈述 句中, 有“或许, 大概, 可能”之意(可能性 很小); 现在 “may/might + 状态动词” 过去 “may/might have done” *Rose might have returned home, but I’m not sure. (3)may可以表示 “祝愿”, might不能这样用 E. g: May God bless you! May you be happy!
5 will / would 的用法(5点) ①表“请求”,would 比will更婉转; ②表“意愿”,will现在的意愿,would则表示 过去的意愿; Eg: I will never do that again. She would n’t write to me last year. ③表“习惯”,will表现在;would表过去; Eg: Oil will float on water. Tom would visitor his grandparents once a week when he was in middle school.
④表“猜测”:will 表对现在的猜测;would 表 对过去的猜测; e. g: Watering these vegetables will make your dress dirty. The poor boy thought the girl would refuse him. ⑤ 表“允诺”“命令”“注定会”等感情色彩; e. g: I promise you I will win this competition. You will regret if you miss the chance to go abroad.
