Unit 2 Review Presentation

West African Kingdoms Their wealth was based on gold. Mansa Musa was, perhaps, the richest person ever. He took a legendary haj (pilgrimage) to Mecca. He brought back many talented academics, scientists, astronomers, doctors, etc. from the Muslim Empire.

Muslim Empire They were extremely advanced for the times. They spread through conquest and trade.

Medieval China These were the Mongol Empires. The Mongols were great warriors and excellent at conquering. Their empire was large and trade flourished because it was peaceful. The Mongols kept themselves apart from the people they conquered by only allowing Mongols into the Army and the top government positions. Marco Polo (European) visited Medieval China and was very impressed with how advanced they were.

Charlemagne After the Fall of Rome, Feudalism develops in Europe. Rome had been conquered by invaders from the north and the Vikings. Charlemagne manages to unite Europe under Christianity, but it soon falls apart after his death.

Feudal System The King owns all the land, he allows people to live on it for certain favors they provide to him. The Lords own large portions of the King’s land. They provide the King knights for protection and pay him taxes. The Knights live on the Lord’s land provide him loyal service and protection. The peasants live on the Lord’s land provide the food for the Kingdom.

Medieval Church. Very powerful, idea of “Papal Supremacy, ” which means the Pope (leader of the Church) has authority over all Kings. Heresy- ideas that went against the Church, you would be burned at the stake. Excommunication- kicked out of the Church.

The Crusades The Byzantine Empire was invaded by the Turks, and they started killing Christians who were on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Byzantine Empire reaches out to the Western Roman Empire and asks for help. Many people volunteer to go take back the Holy Land from the Muslims. The Muslims viewed the conflict as a “jihad, ” or “holy war. ” The Muslims win.

They Byzantine Empire It was the Eastern Roman Empire Emperor Justinian put together the “Justinian Code, ” which was a well organized book of laws that his subjects had to follow. Many of those rules are still in effect today. Constantinople was the capital, it was a link between European and Asian trade. Due to its geography it became extremely wealthy.

100 Years War Fought between England France. New technology, like the Long Bow, make Knights no longer needed.

Magna Carter This was a document that took away power from the King and gave more power to the Nobles were upset that they had been taxed so heavily by the King, and the new law made it so the King had to ask the nobles to tax them. It also set up rules for the accused, you would have to get a trial of your peers.
