West African Kingdoms Their wealth was based on gold. Mansa Musa was, perhaps, the richest person ever. He took a legendary haj (pilgrimage) to Mecca. He brought back many talented academics, scientists, astronomers, doctors, etc. from the Muslim Empire.

Medieval China These were the Mongol Empires. The Mongols were great warriors and excellent

Medieval China These were the Mongol Empires. The Mongols were great warriors and excellent at conquering. Their empire was large and trade flourished because it was peaceful. The Mongols kept themselves apart from the people they conquered by only allowing Mongols into the Army and the top government positions. Marco Polo (European) visited Medieval China and was very impressed with how advanced they were.

Feudal System The King owns all the land, he allows people to live on it for certain favors they provide to him. The Lords own large portions of the King’s land. They provide the King knights for protection and pay him taxes. The Knights live on the Lord’s land provide him loyal service and protection. The peasants live on the Lord’s land provide the food for the Kingdom.

The Byzantine Empire reaches out to the Western Roman Empire and asks for help. Many people volunteer to go take back the Holy Land from the Muslims. The Muslims viewed the conflict as a “jihad, ” or “holy war. ” The Muslims win.
