COMMUNICATION. . Communication is only effective where information is conveyed, received and understood. It is important that a leader possesses good verbal (speaking) communication skills in order to brief and debrief teams effectively. However, in addition to good verbal skills, a good leader will demonstrate good non-verbal communication skills (or body language) while speaking to the team. Other communication skills, such as reading, writing and listening, will also be used at various times.
Key terms Brief – when a senior officer gives information and instructions to team members, usually before some type of operation Debrief – when a team gathers together after an operation to review and discuss how things went and what lessons have been learned
An example of a briefing
VERBAL COMMUNICATION / SPEAKING When speaking to a group the leader must check that everyone understands the information that is being conveyed. Effective speaking must be: Clear Concise Simple Prepared
VERBAL COMMUNICATION / SPEAKING CONT… The content of the information can be affected by the tone, speed and pitch of the speaker’s voice. Skilled speakers vary these for emphasis and to avoid monotony. When briefing and debriefing the team, confirmation of the team’s understanding should be sought throughout the speech. The group can demonstrate this by using certain body language, such as nodding, or by answering questions from the leader.
In Afghanistan “special forces” will need excellent communication skills to train soldiers who may not speak any English. A prime example are “Delta force”
LISTENING SKILLS. . . Communication is a two-way process. In a briefing or debriefing session the team leader must be prepared to listen to comments from the members of the team. A good leader will take note of what the team members are saying and value their contribution.
Sometimes not listening to each other can cause problems. . notice the body language.
ACTIVITY……. . (LISTENING SKILLS)
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION. . It is not always what we say that sends out messages, but the way we say it. Our body language can give out strong signals to other people which could mean the total opposite of what we are saying. Ninety-three per cent of all communication is nonverbal: ● body language (55%) ● tone of voice (38%) ● verbal (7%).
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION CONT. . . People use body language unconsciously to communicate information to another person. It is often our body language that reveals our emotions even if we do not intend this to happen. Being aware of your own body language and being able to interpret the body language of others can be very useful in the public services. Police officers are skilled in interpreting body language when they interview suspects. Avoiding eye contact, sweating and shaking could all indicate that a person is not telling the truth. Officers need to be aware of their own body language, for example, when trying to calm down a situation where someone is behaving aggressively. (activity 4 up 4 down)
