Q 1: First Continental Congress • Sept 1774 – 55 delegates from 12 of 13 colonies met in Philadelphia, discussed future plans and challenged British control, known as First Continental Congress • Delegates included Samuel Adams, John Jay, George Washington, Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry • Issued document, Declaration and Resolves, calling for repeal of Intolerable Acts and demanding Parliament and king respect colonists’ rights as citizens • Agree to boycott British goods until demands are met, also decide to start training colonial troops • Most delegates did not call for independence at this time, but seeds were planted

Q 2: England Won’t Back Down • Many thought boycotts would end conflict • Parliament and King George III did not back down, increased taxes and troops in colonies • Patriots began preparing for war with British, gathered and stored weapons in town of Concord (outside of Boston) • On April 18, 1775 Royal Governor of Massachusetts, General Thomas Gage, sent small force to seize the Patriot weapons

Q 3: Shot Heard ’Round the World • Colonists learned Redcoats were going to Concord, sent Paul Revere and William Dawes to warn Americans to stop them • When 700 British troops reached nearby town of Lexington, 70 colonial minutemen were waiting and refused to drop weapons • Skirmish broke out, someone fired a shot, 8 minutemen died and 1 British soldier was wounded • Minutemen could not stop British advance, and Redcoats continued on to Concord • In Concord colonists forced British to turn back and retreat, British suffered heavy casualties losing 273 troops (colonists suffered 95 fatalities) • Became known as the Battle of Lexington and Concord

Q 4: Battle of Bunker Hill • After Lexington and Concord, over 20, 000 men gather in Boston to join colonist army • May 10, 1775 a Second Continental Congress meeting takes place, form a Continental Army, appoint George Washington as General • British viewed Boston as head and heart of rebellion, decide to improve control of Boston Harbor by capturing nearby Bunker and Breed’s Hills • June of 1775 - Americans withstood first two charges, but third attack was too much – English win, but with heavy losses (1, 054 casualties to Americans’ 411) • Becomes known as Battle of Bunker Hill, proves Americans would not be easy to defeat

Q 5: Last Attempt at Peace • After Bunker Hill, King George III officially declared colonies in state of rebellion – this basically was a declaration of war against colonies • Despite conflict most colonists still hoped for peace • In July 1775 Congress drafted Olive Branch Petition and sent it to King George III asking the king to restore harmony between Britain and the colonies • King George III rejected petition and created more measures to punish colonies such as navel blockades King George III

Q 6: Common Sense • In early 1776 most Americans still wanted to avoid permanent break with Britain • Publication of pamphlet – Common Sense – written by Thomas Paine, helped convince many Americans that a complete break with Britain was necessary • Paine argued King George III would never accept limits on his actions and continue abuse of power - if Americans wanted a republican government they needed to rid themselves of British rule Thomas Paine • Over 100, 000 copies were sold in 3 months

Q 7: Declaring Independence from Britain • June 1776 - Second Continental Congress appointed committee to write formal declaration announcing to world colonists’ argument for independence from British rule • Known as Committee of Five - included John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, and Robert Livingston • Thomas Jefferson was appointed to draft (write) the document • On July 2, 1776 Congress approved resolution to declare independence from Great Britain • On July 4, 1776 Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and it was officially entered into congressional record
