Reading Read the two advertisements and answer the questions. 1. Where would the advertisements appear? The advertisement on the left would appear on an office notice board or as a memo circulated to staff, and the advertisement on the right would appear in a national newspaper. 2. How is the information organized in the two advertisement? The advertisement on the left is organized as a memo and is brief and to the point. It has a memo-style heading and has three paragraphs: the fact that the vacancy exists, the requirements of the job, how to apply. The advertisement on the right is laid out more clearly as an advertisement: centered information with bolding to make the company name, the company and the job and how to apply stand out. There are four main paragraphs: the job and the company, the requirements of the job, a reference to rewards and how to apply.

The company is described in terms suggesting size, quality and success ( largest, quality products, partners worldwide. ) The rewards mention career development and there will probably be performance –related pay.
Listening 1. Prediction Which advertisement will the HR managers place first? They will advertise internally first because it is company policy; the company policy is to promote its own people and help them to develop a career in the company.
Listening 2. What are the disadvantages of each type of advertisement? Internal: there are not enough applicants and a lot of political problems. If one internal applicant is given the job, and others are not happy. External: a lot of people wouldn’t be happy and it is against the company policy.
Case Study • You have worked in a company for five years and have made great contributions to the company in international trade. The company would promote one staff to be a director of the department. You thought you would be the right person for the post and most of your colleges held the same view. But unfortunately one of your colleague was promoted, who was actually not so understanding. What will you do? Will you leave the company?
