Asking people to do things: q. Can you wait a moment, please? q. Could you tell me how to get to the library? q. Do you think you could post my letter? q. I wonder if you could sign the paper? q. Do you mind helping me with my project?
Asking for permission: q. May I come in? q. Could I use your calculator? q. Can I speak to Mr. Drill, please?
For an invitation: q Would you like a cup of tea? q Would you like to play chess with me? q Do you want to go and get a drink? q I would like you to come over for dinner if it’s possible? q Will you be able to join me for lunch today?
Informally to a friend q Do you think you could turn down the TV? q Do you think you could drive me to school ? q May I could borrow your car?
Formally to a Stranger q. Could you tell me where the nearest ATM is, please? q. Would you mind if I sit here? q. Do you mind lending me your book, please? q. Would you like to sit here? q. May you give me a hand with my suitcase?
We can add the phrase by any chance at the end of our request to make it more polite. q. Are you , by any chance , available Saturday night? q. Can you , by any chance, help me out with my luggage ? q. Do you , by any chance, have a couple of minutes to spare?
