Prosperity in West Berlin • By 1961, the West Berlin economy was flourishing and over three million East Germans had fled into West Berlin. • East German Officials became frustrated with the number of East Germans leaving the country and tried to find a way to solve the problem.
Berlin Wall • On August 13 th 1961, East German soldiers began construction of a wall that would separate the city of West Berlin from the rest of East Germany. • The Berlin Wall became a symbol of communist oppression.
