Context �You have now completed your social work degree and have been offered a regional safeguarding officer position in an academy chain of children centres operating all over the East and West Sussex area. �Whilst on your visit to one of the centres, you are asked to work on a disclosure flow chart update for a new safeguarding officer.

P 4 task �Explain the appropriate responses when child maltreatment or abuse is suspected.

Promise the child that the perpetrator will be punished for their crimes. Ask the child a list of questions about the abuse allegation. Work with the Designated Child Protection Officer when social services visit the child. Review the procedures you have followed via looking at the protecting and safeguarding process. Speak to (interview) the child in a confidential space. Ensure after the interview that your records are accurate and factual. Phone the police immediately.
