Script: Page ID: Slide 2 Unit 1 Lesson B Audio text: Image description: N/A Image filename: N/A Text on screen: Unit 1 Lesson B This lesson is about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. • Nouns are a person, place, thing or idea. • Verbs are an action, or something that can be done. • Adjectives are usually used to describe nouns, they tell “what kind” a noun is. • Adverbs are usually used to describe a verb, they tell “how” a verb is done. To tell if an adjective or adverb is needed in a sentence, you should ask if the word will tell what kind something is, or how something is done. If it is what kind, an adjective is needed. If it is how, an adverb is needed. Adjective and adverb word forms are usually almost the same. To change an adjective to an adverb, you just add -ly to the end of the adjective. Example: Adjective quick Adverb quickly. This will not always work, some adjectives and adverbs are irregular, or not normal. They cannot be changed by just adding -ly. The table shows the irregular adjectives and adverbs for this lesson. Script: Page ID: Slide 3 Unit 1 Lesson C Audio text: Image description: 1. Older woman sitting in a wheelchair, holding a cane. A man is behind her, seemingly pushng the wheelchair. Image filename: 1. Woman and man Text on screen: Unit 1 Lesson C This lesson is about giving opinions. Opinions are things that a person thinks or believes about a person, thing, or situation. Different people may have different opinions. For example, I think dogs are the best, but my wife thinks cats are the best. These are our opinions. To give opinions we will use noun clauses with the word “that”. Before we get started, we need to review some important vocabulary. • Subject- the person or thing that is doing the verb • Object- the person or thing that the verb is being done to • Clause- a group of words with a subject and a verb For this lesson we will use an introductory clause at the start of each sentence. You can find a list of introductory clauses in the Student Book on page 10. We will use a noun clause to give our opinions. All of the answers for this lesson will use this sentence form: Introductory clause + that + noun clause. We will follow these steps to create the sentences: 1. Choose an introductory clause 2. Use the word “that” 3. Add the noun clause 4. Decide if you need a question mark or period To decide if you need a question mark, we will look at the introductory clause. If the subject comes before the verb, we will use a period. If the verb comes before the subject, we will use a question mark. In the examples, I will write the verbs in red and the subjects in blue. Do you think that tacos are delicious? Because the verb “Do” comes before the subject “you”, we use a question mark. I believe tacos are delicious. Because the subject “I” comes before the verb “believe”, we use a period. Use sentences including an introductory clause, that, and a noun clause to answer questions about the man and woman in the picture.

Script: Page ID: Slide 5 Unit 1 Lesson E Audio text: Image description: N/A Image filename: None Text on screen: Unit 1 Lesson E When writing a paragraph, it is important to use a topic sentence and supporting sentences. A topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph is about. Supporting sentences use details to show why the topic sentence is true. Choose the correct topic sentence for the following paragraph. I love barbecue. I have always enjoyed cooking. _________________________. When I was six years old, I was already learning to cook. I would cook myself eggs every morning for breakfast. When I was nine years old, I cooked dinner for my family two nights a week. My love of cooking grew even more as I got older and I got to work in multiple restaurants. Now I spend almost every weekend making barbecue or learning how to cook a new dish. Complete the outline for a paragraph about your favorite activity, include at least four supporting details. I have completed an outline as an example. Topic Sentence: My favorite thing to do in my free time is to spend time with my dog. Supporting Details: • I take her for a walk every day • We watch tv every night • I have taught her many different tricks • She sleeps at the foot of my bed Next, use the outline to make a paragraph. Here is my example: My favorite thing to do in my free time is to spend time with my dog. I take her for a walk every day. At night, we watch TV together. I have taught her many tricks, like high-five, lay down and roll over. When I go to bed, she sleeps at the foot of the bed. Email written answers to your teacher.
