Unit 1: Thinking Geographically 1. 4: Spatial Concepts
Enduring Understanding PSO-1 By the end of this section, you will understand that geographers analyze relationships among and between places to reveal important spatial patterns.
Place vs. Space Place: a specific point on earth, distinguished by a particular characteristic **each place has an absolute & relative location
Place vs. Space: The physical distance between two places on the earth’s surface
Time-Space Compression • refers to the set of processes that cause the relative spaces between places (i. e. travel time or cost) to lessen • effectively makes the space between places grow “closer”

DISTANCE DECAY • • Spatial interaction • the contact, movement, and flow of things between locations – physical (through roads) or information (through radio or Internet) • The increasing connection between places is reflected in the growth of spatial interaction = GLOBALIZATION Friction of Distance aka DISTANCE DECAY • when things are farther apart, they tend to be less well connected
Distance Decay- stores, restaurants, etc.
Essential Knowledge PSO 1. A. 1 Spatial concepts include absolute and relative location, space, place, flows, distance decay, time-space compression, and pattern. Pattern 1. It’s how things (cities, roads, etc. ) are placed on Earth. 2. Most states outside of the original 13 states have counties arranged in a grid pattern. 3. Patterns make things and places easier to find. 4. Patterns can be arranged in line or clustered
