TECHNOLOGY IN USE Technology can be integrated to achieve significant 6 improvement by supporting teaching and learning; moreover, technology infuses classrooms and digital learning tools, such as computers and hand-held devices, expands course-offerings, experience, and learning materials. The use of technology is increasing day by day, we all depend on technology and we use various technologies to accomplish specific tasks in our lives. Today we have emerging technologies which impact our lives in different ways. So embracing it and learning how to use technology in any capacity is very important and recommended. As the world keeps on developing, technology will change, what is working today might not work or be efficient tomorrow; thus, it is better to stay upto-date with new emerging technologies and learn how to Dr. Hatem Elaydi, Islamic University of Gaza, Spring 2016, Unit 1 embrace and use them in our daily life.

Exercise 1. a Think about two products you use regularly and discuss the following: What are the main functions of the products? (What do they do? ) What are their different applications? (What are they used for? ) 7 Dr. Hatem Elaydi, Islamic University of Gaza, Spring 2016, Unit 1

Examples: Functions of the products (Make our life easier, save time and efforts) mobile

Examples: Functions of the products (Make our life easier, save time and efforts) mobile phones – phone calls, text messages, exchanging photos and videos, voice recording electric drill/screwdriver handsets – for providing a turning force, drilling holes, putting in and removing screws, tightening and loosening nuts/bolts hammers – for generating impacts, for driving in nails, hitting punches and chisels, breaking things 8 Dr. Hatem Elaydi, Islamic University of Gaza, Spring 2016, Unit 1

1. b What do you know about the GPS (Global Positioning System) ? The Global Positioning 9 System (GPS) is system that defines places and positions. (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U. S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980 s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any Dr. Hatem Elaydi, Islamic University of Gaza, Spring 2016, Unit 1 weather conditions,
