UNIT 1: QUALITIES OF SOUND

1. SOUND, NOISE AND SILENCE Essentially, music is sound. Sound is produced when an object vibrates and it is what can be perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing. It travels through physical mediums by sound waves and it is normally a pleasant feeling. Noise is a disagreeable auditory experience. The physical difference between sound and noise is the sort of waves: sound waves are regular an in a noise, the wave is irregular.

2. THE QUALITIES OF SOUND Sound have four qualities: PITCH: high or low DURATION: long or short INTENSITY: loud or soft TIMBRE: different voices or instruments

2. 1. Pitch In music the pitch of a note means how high or low a sound is. Pitch is represented by notes. Notes are named Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si, and in other countries C, D, E, F, G, A, B Notes are placed in a staff (pentagrama) with a clef(clave).

We have different clefs. The most important are treble clef (clave de sol) and bass clef (clave de fa). When notes are used that go outside the range of the stave (either above or below), short lines called “ ledger lines ” (líneas adicionales) are added to extend the stave.

2. 2. Duration refers to how long or short notes are. Duration is represented by note values and rests.

A dotted note is a note with a small dot written after it. The dot increases the duration of the basic note by half of its original value.

2. 3. Intensity, is how loud or soft a sound is. It is represented by dynamics.
