Describe the persuasive appeal of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Refer to specific persuasive devices and literary elements in your answer. Unpack the prompt: ● ● ● What is the persuasive appeal in the speech? ○ Ethos - refers to the credibility or character of the speaker or writer ○ Pathos - refers to the emotional connection a writer or speaker has with his audience ○ Logos - refers to the logic or reasoning of an argument What is Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech about? ○ Dr. King was advocating for equal rights for black Americans when he delivered this speech. What literary elements are used in the speech? ○ Dr King’s choice of language, use of antithesis, and parallelism draws the emotion of his audience. ○ Dr. King clearly states his main idea and effectively reiterates his argument throughout his speech, providing a sense of logic and reasoning for his audience. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ’s “I Have a Dream” Speech One of the most recognizable persuasive speeches in modern history is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Dr. King was advocating for equal rights for black Americans when he delivered this speech. Watch here and read his speech here. As you listen to and read his speech, take note of the following: ● Take notes on the persuasive techniques and phrases Dr. King uses when speaking. ● What examples or illustrations does he use? ● Which words seem to be most persuasive? ● Interested in more? “I Have a Dream” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Example of pathos – it gives a strong visual of men being tied down by chains causing an emotional response from the audience Example of ethos – he is establishing his credibility by reminding the audience he is also affected by these issues and has lived through these hardships Example of logos – he is citing facts. In this case observable truths that were happening to this group of people at this time
