The transfer of loads to foundations
The transfer of loads to foundations Loads are classified as: • live • dead • dynamic. © Pearson Education Ltd 2013. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only.
Buildings are designed to resist dead, dynamic and impact/live loads • Dead loads This is a load that does not move, such as the weight of the building itself.
Buildings are designed to resist dead, dynamic and impact/live loads • Dynamic loads These are loads that can change during the use of the building, such as the load from people and furniture.
Buildings are designed to resist dead, dynamic and impact/live loads • Impact/live loads This is when something hits a building or falls on it, such as a heavy object.
For each of these loads think of examples of each. • Dead loads This is a load that does not move, such as the weight of the building itself. • Dynamic loads These are loads that can change during the use of the building, such as the load from people and furniture. • Impact/live loads This is when something hits a building or falls on it, such as a heavy object.
