Unit 1 Exploration 1: Defining Systems Objective: Today I will be introduced to systems on earth
systems • A system is a set of interacting parts working together. • Example: corals, fishes, and seawater are all parts, or components of a coral reef system.
Earth’s systems • 1 Geosphere- Rocks, minerals, and landforms at Earth’s surface and in its interior, including soil, sediment, and molten rocks. • 2 Hydrosphere- Water, including ocean water, groundwater, glaciers and ice caps, rivers, lakes, etc. • 3 Atmosphere- Gases surrounding the Earth (i. e. , our air) • 4 Biosphere- Living organisms, including humans.
Input and Output • • Matter and energy flow into, within, or out of systems. _into_ Algae uses energy from the sun to grow. _within_ Fish in the reef eat the algae. _out_ Sharks and other fish come to the reef to feed.
Input and Output • Matter or energy that enters a system is called an input. A coral reef relies on inputs of seawater and sunlight. • Some inputs are harmful: pollution • A product of a system is called output. A product can also become an input for another. For example: algae releases oxygen through photosynthesis which other organisms use for respiration.
Natural systems • A coral is a natural system, because it occurs in the natural world and was not designed by people. • In order to study a system, scientists begin by imagining a boundary, or surface that encloses the system. • Natural systems have properties or characteristics that result from the interactions of their parts.
