UNIT 1: EMBEDDED ASSESSMENT NARRATIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENT Ms. Gonzalez 6 th Grade Language Arts
WHAT IS NARRATIVE WRITING? v. Narrative writing tells a story or describes an incident, whether true or fictional. v. A personal narrative shares an important experience from the writer's life. v For this assignment, we will be focusing specifically on a personal narrative.
PROMPTS v Listed below are two prompts. You will are able to select the one you would like for this assignment. Make sure that you only pick one: • Think about a time when something unexpected happened. Write a narrative in which you tell about an unexpected event that happened to you or someone you know. Be sure to include specific details so that a reader can follow your story. • Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "You must do the thing you think you cannot do. " Write a narrative about a time when you did something you thought you could not do. Be sure to include specific details so that a reader can follow your story.

THREE PARAGRAPHS v Three Paragraphs • Paragraph 1=Attention grabber, introduce characters, setting, and the conflict. • Paragraph 2=Develop the conflict and/or the main plot of the story. Allow the reader to really get to know your characters through details and dialogue. • Paragraph 3=Resolution to the conflict and/or the ending of your story. Present a theme or message to really captivate your audience.
POINT-OF-VIEW v In first person point-of-view, the teller is a character inside the story and often uses the pronoun “I. ” • Example: “My friend and I went to the mall today to purchase an outfit for our upcoming event. ”
DIALOGUE & DIALOGUE TAGS v Dialogue is the conversation that takes place between characters. v It allows us to better understand who your characters are in the story. v Dialogue tags tell us who spoke those words and in what manner. v You must put quotation marks around the dialogue and then place a comma to separate the dialogue from the tag. • Example: “Amy, I absolutely love that outfit, ” shouted Kasey. SENSORY DETAILS v Sensory details are details that appeal to all 5 senses. • • • v Taste Touch Smell Hearing Sight It helps the reader better imagine the scene. • Example: The cheese on the pizza oozed off the plate as I carefully lifted it and took a bite off the crunchy crust. Suddenly, the crumbs began to fall of my mouth like a cascade of rain drops falling from the sky.
TRANSITIONAL WORDS v Transitions are words or phrases that help the reader follow your story by smoothly connecting ideas, details or events v Below are some examples of transitional words/phrases: • • • However In addition Furthermore Nonetheless Suddenly
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS, CHARACTERS & SETTING v Sequence of Events • Your story must have a clear beginning, middle and end. v Characters • You must introduce the reader to the characters in the story and make sure you describe them in detail. v Setting • Setting is where the story takes place. • It is critical that you are also very vivid about this aspect of the narrative so that your audience can clearly envision it.
STEPS TO COMPLETING THIS ASSIGNMENT v Step 1: Pre-Writing • We will be completing an outline, in class, where you will organize your ideas and thoughts for this writing assignment. v Step 2: Drafting • For homework, once you have completed your outline, you will compose your draft. v Step 3: Revising & Editing • Once you complete your draft, we will be peer-editing our drafts in class.
STEPS TO COMPLETING THIS ASSIGNMENT v Step 4: Publishing • Once your narrative has been revised and edited, you will be publishing it. • You will re-write it in blue/black pen in its final form. Typing it is optional. • Make sure to correct any and all mistakes that were noted during the previous stage in the writing process. v Step 5: Submit the Narrative • You will then submit your narrative on the specified due date (see website for details). • You will be turning in the following: • The outline. • Your draft with the edits/revisions your peer made. • Your published copy.
