Republicanism • The ideas of John Locke combined with the belief that governments derive their power from the consent of the people form the foundation of republicanism.
• Representative democracies based on republicanism can take at least three forms: participatory democracy, pluralist democracy, and elite democracy.
• In a participatory democracy, the people participate directly in the decisions of society, rather than electing representatives to act in their interests.
• In a pluralist democracy, interest groups organize to try and exert influence on political decision making. Labor unions and the gun lobby are examples of this.
• In an elite democracy, it is recognized that there is an inequity of power and that the elites, those with resources and influence, dominate.
