UNIFORM WEAR 5. Uniform Wear. AFJROTC requires all cadets enrolled in the program to wear the uniform at least one day per week to school. This includes the entire school day. Unless announced otherwise, uniform day is on Wednesday. Uniforms will also be required on mandatory uniform days, such as awards ceremonies, picture day, etc. 5. 1. General. 5. 1. 1. Cadets will receive a zero for their daily uniform grade for the following situations: failure to wear the uniform on required uniform day, failure to wear the uniform the entire day, obvious violation of uniform wear, cadet’s personal grooming is drastically out of regulation requirements, or if uniform is dirty and unkempt. You must bring in a letter from your parent/guardian stating the reason why you could not wear your uniform on the designated day to be considered excused, however, in order to receive credit for your weekly uniform grade, you must wear the uniform properly before the next week’s scheduled uniform day. Also, if you are absent the day of required uniform wear, you are required to make-up uniform wear prior to the next mandatory uniform day. 5. 1. 2. Continual or repeated violations of uniform wear will result in a failing grade and removal from the JROTC program. 5. 1. 3. ALL uniform items must be wrinkle free and clean. The light blue shirt can be machine washed and ironed, but all other items MUST be dry cleaned. No civilian clothes will be worn with the uniform. 5. 1. 4. Refer to Figures 5 -7 on specific uniform wear. 5. 1. 4. 1. Service dress uniform. The service dress uniform consists of wearing the service coat with tie or tie tab (never wear the service coat without tie or tie tab). NEVER have the coat unbuttoned while wearing it. If the coat is taken off you should carry it in your left hand. If you remove your coat you should have ranks on your light blue shirt. 5. 1. 4. 2. A solid, white V-neck undershirt must be worn with the blue uniform at all times. When wearing the blue shirt without tie/tie tab, the V-neck undershirt must not be visible.

5. 1. 4. 3 Physical Training Uniform. No civilian clothes are to be worn with the physical training uniform. The uniform should only be worn in combinations designated by the SASI or ASI. Proper wear of the PT uniform and participation will result in a grade of 100. Failure to wear the uniform in the correct combination or non-participation will result in a grade of 60 for a wellness grade for that day. Failure to wear the PT uniform and non-participation will result in a grade of 0. 5. 2 Grooming Standards. 5. 2. 1 Male Hair. Male hair will be tapered on both sides and back. Tapered appearance means hair conforms to the shape of the head, curving inward to the natural termination point. Hair will not exceed 1 ¼ in in bulk and ¼ inch at termination point. Hair will not touch the ears or collar of the shirt/jacket. Visible, foreign items will not be attached to hair. Hair will not be visible below the front band of the headgear when worn. Mohawks, mullets, cornrows, dreadlocks or etched designs are not allowed. 5. 2. 2 Male Mustaches must be neatly trimmed and cannot extend downward beyond the lip line of the upper lip or extend sideways beyond a vertical line drawn upward from both corners of the mouth. 5. 2. 3 Male Beards or facial hair are not authorized, unless if it is for medical reasons, in which a letter from a medical doctor must be obtained. If approved, members will keep facial hair trimmed not to exceed ¼ inch in length. 5. 2. 4 Male Sideburns must be straight and even-width, and end in a clean, shaven horizontal line. Sideburns cannot be flared, and cannot extend below the lowest part of the exterior ear opening.

5. 2. 5 Female Hair. Female hair will end above the bottom edge of the collar and will not extend below an invisible line drawn parallel to the ground, both front to back and side to side. Minimum hair length is ¼ inch to a maximum bulk of 3 inches from scalp and will allow proper wear of the headgear. Bangs or side-swept hair will not touch either eyebrow, to include an invisible line drawn across eyebrows and parallel to the ground. Pinned-up hair will be styled in a manner that prevents loose ends from extending upward on the head. For example, when using a clip or hairpins, hair will NOT present the appearance of a rooster tail. When hair is in a bun, the bun must be a single bun, no wider than the width of the head and all loose ends must be tucked in and secured. If worn, hair accessories (fabric scrunchies, hairpins, combs, clips, headbands, elastic bands and barrettes) must match the hair color. Additionally, headbands or fabric scrunches will not exceed 1 inch in width. Ornaments (ribbons, beads, jeweled pins) are NOT authorized. Braids, twists, micro-braids, French braids, Dutch braids and cornrows are authorized. All braids, twists and cornrows will be of uniform dimension, no wider than 1 inch and must be tightly interwoven to present a neat, professional and well-groomed appearance. When worn, multiple braids shall be of uniform dimension, small in diameter and show no more than ¼ inch of the scalp between the braids. A braid, twist and cornrow must continue to the end of the hair without design and following a contour of the head and may be worn loose or in a secured style within hair standards. Whatever hair style chosen, the headgear must fit properly. Locs or shaved heads are not authorized. Hair color, highlights, or frosting will not be faddish and will be a naturallooking hair color, similar to the individual’s hair color.

Nail polish must be a single color to compliment the skin tone. French manicures are authorized. Nails will not have any decorations attached. Extreme colors, such as purple, gold, blue, black, green or fluorescent colors, are not authorized. 5. 2. 8 Body Piercings. Males are not authorized to wear earrings. Females are authorized to wear earrings, one per earlobe. If females have more than one hole in their ear, only one set may be worn in the bottom earlobe. Cadets will not attach or wear jewelry to or through ear, nose, tongue, eyebrows, lips or any exposed. Therefore, cadets need to realize they cannot get any piercings while academically enrolled in JROTC. Wearing a bandaid over the piercing to hide the piercing does not present a professional appearance and is not encouraged. 5. 2. 9 Female Earrings must be small and spherical in shape. Only Pearl, silver, gold or diamond earrings may be worn. Earrings will not extend past the bottom of the earlobe. 5. 2. 10 Necklaces worn will NOT be visible when any JROTC uniform combination is worn. 5. 2. 11 Bracelets. Only one bracelet may be worn. It must be conservative, in either gold or silver color and must not be wider than ½ inch. However, POW/MIA and medical alert bracelets may be worn and not meet these requirements. 5. 2. 12 Rings. A maximum of three rings on both hands combined may be worn, however thumb rings are not authorized. 5. 2. 13 Watch. Only one watch may be worn and should be conservative. 5. 2. 14 Sunglasses will not be worn in formation or around the neck or on the top or back of the head while in uniform. 5. 2. 15 Attache case, Gym Bag, Backpack, Purse. Should be carried in the left hand or on the left shoulder. Backpacks may also be worn on both shoulders. 5. 2. 16 Gloves, Scarf, Earmuffs. These items cannot have any ornamentation and must be solid black. They can only be worn with outer garments, however, the scarf must be tucked into the jacket.

The T-shirt will not be visible with the open-collar blue shirt. 5. 2. 18 Female Black Pumps. Females may wear black pumps with any uniform combination, however the female cadet must purchase it. If worn, the pumps must be solid black with no ornamentation and must have a rounded throat. The heel cannot be higher than 2 ½ inches while the tip of the heel cannot be less than ½ inch in diameter. Wedge shoes are NOT allowed. 5. 3 No-Hat Areas. The hat must be worn at all times while outdoors unless specified otherwise by the SASI or ASI. This includes wearing the hat while under the pavilion in front of the school or any other cover. While inside, your hat should remain off and can be placed between the 1 st and 2 nd belt loop, either side, with a two-inch space above the belt or neatly stored in your book bag, backpack or purse. 5. 4 Badges. Wearing badges from other services beyond their intended purpose, badges from the regular Air Force, or other organizations is prohibited on the AFJROTC uniform. However, badges earned by cadets enrolled in a sister service JROTC program may be worn on the AFJROTC uniform in the location specified by the sister service. Refer to Figures 3 -6 for placement of badges. 5. 4. 1. Flight Solo: If you possess a solo flight certificate signed by a FAA certified flight instructor for either powered or non-powered aircraft, provide a copy of this to the SASI/ASI to earn the Flight Solo badge. 5. 4. 2. Flight Certificate: If you posses a valid FAA pilot’s certificate for either powered or non-powered aircraft, provide a copy of this to the SASI/ASI to earn the Flight Certificate badge. 5. 4. 3. Awareness Presentation Team: This badge will be worn by the 8 member Awareness Presentation Team selected by the SASI/ASI. 5. 4. 4. Distinguished AFJROTC Cadet Badge. One third-year cadet will be selected at the end of each school year to wear this badge their final year in the AFJROTC program. This cadet is selected by the SASI and must be of high moral character, demonstrate positive personal attributes, display outstanding military potential, and maintain consistent academic and military excellence. Additionally, the cadet should hold the following ribbons prior to selection: Leadership, Achievement, Superior Performance, Academic, Cocurricular Activities Leadership and Service.

It is to only be worn on the light blue shirt underneath the epaulets and on the service dress uniform. The cord should be centered on your left shoulder. The pin underneath the cord should not be seen. Our program uses grey, white, and blue and white shoulder cords. The grey cord indicates a key staff position, the white cord indicates a lower staff position, and the blue and white cord indicates cadet drill team and color guard commanders. Only one shoulder cord can be worn on the uniform. 5. 5. 2. Patches. The AFJROTC patch is to be worn on the left shoulder, approximately ½ inch centered from the shoulder seam. The unit patch is to be worn on the right shoulder, also ½ inch centered from the shoulder seam. Ensure patches are sewn; refrain from using ironing tape. 5. 6 Airman’s Battle Uniform (ABU) Wear 5. 6. 1. ABUs will be issued to cadets with a key staff position as designated by the SASI/ASI. ABUs may be substituted for one regular uniform day per month, normally the 3 rd Wednesday. ABUs cannot be worn with civilian attire, nor cannot be worn outside the JROTC program. 5. 6. 2. Once issued, in order to continue to wear the ABU, a cadet must perform 4 community service hours every 4 weeks. Failure to perform 4 community service hours will result in turning in the ABU uniform. 5. 6. 3. ABU cap will be worn with the ABUs. 5. 6. 4. Tan colored T-shirt will be issued and must be worn under the ABU jacket. 5. 6. 5. Pants will be bloused or tucked into the boot. 5. 6. 6. Ropes and ranks will not be worn with the ABUs.
