Unidad 6 The Preterite of Regular –AR verbs & –car, -gar, -zar verbs
The Preterite Tense • A tense tells you when the action took place. The preterite tense is one of two main past tenses in Spanish. • The preterite is for: • Actions completed in the past. • Actions with clearly defined beginnings or endings in past. • Actions repeated a specific number of times in the past.
The Preterite Tense • In English, regular verbs in the past tense end in –ed. –You lifted weights yesterday. –Michelle walked to the park last week. –We skated last Friday. –I rented a movie yesterday.
The Preterite Tense • Words that express the PAST: • Ayer - yesterday • Anoche - last night • La semana pasada - last week • El año pasado - last year • Ayer por la tarde - yesterday afternoon • Ayer por la mañana - yesterday morning

The Preterite Tense • Notice that the yo and usted/él/ella forms have an accent over the final vowel. Yo nadé en el mar Mariana patinó ayer. • The nosotros(as) form is the same in the preterite as in the present tense. Caminamos en la playa anoche.
Examples of the preterite • Yo caminé en la playa anoche. I walked on the beach last night. • Sofía nadó en la piscina ayer. Sofía swam in the pool yesterday. • Tú hablaste con la maestra la semana pasada. You talked to the teacher last week. • El año pasado tomé una clase de ciencias. Last year I took a science class.
Verbos irregulares Stem-Changing Verbs You do not have to make normal (e-ie, e-i; o-ue, u -ue) stem changes in the preterite. Ella juega - She plays (present) Ella jugó - She played (preterite) Ellos empiezan - They begin (present) Ellos empezaron - They began (preterite) However, the preterite has many other irregular verbs!

Verbos –CAR/-GAR/-ZAR • Regular verbs that end in –car, -gar and – zar have a spelling change in the yo form of the preterite. • This change allows these words to maintain their original sound.
Verbos –CAR, -GAR, -ZAR Verbs that end in –CAR, -GAR or –ZAR will make spelling changes in the “yo” form preterite only. -CAR c qu Buscar busqué -GAR g gu Llegar llegué -ZAR z c Almorzar almorcé
Examples • Yo busqué el bloqueador de sol. • I looked for the sunscreen. • Él buscó las toallas. • He looked for the towels. • Yo jugué al béisbol. • I played baseball.
