BRIEF SITUATIONAL ANAYSIS • Gender-based violence against women and girls is one of the most significant social issues today with widespread impacts, including on health and well-being, productivity, and national development. • Bhutan experiencing rising cases and prevalence of GBV • Accordingly to the VAW study 2017: • More than two in every five women (44. 6%) experienced one or more forms of partner violence in their lifetime, be it physical, sexual, psychological or economic. • Almost one in three (30. 0%) experienced any of these types of violence in the last 12 months. • Family members, parents, siblings, and teachers were identified as the most common perpetrators of non-partner physical violence, • More than half of women and girls (53. 4 %) agreed that a man is justified in hitting his wife for one or more of the reasons presented in the survey • 45% of the women and girls reported that they experienced physical violence as a child
SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS • Numerous efforts initiated in Responses to GBV • NWC 24 hr toll free helpline (1098)to respond to women and children in difficult circumstances. • Ministry of Health’s One Stop Crisis Center • WCCU by the Royal Bhutan Police. • RENEW services • Currently the national protection systems concentrate mostly on secondary and tertiary prevention or response services, without investment in primary prevention to eliminate VAWC/GBV
PROJECT BACKGROUND • The Gakey Lamtoen , GBV Pilot project is first of it’s kind • Primary prevention approach targeting adolescents and caregivers to address the root causes of problematic social norms that lead to GBV in particular VAWC. / • Piloted in Babesa Thimphu City in Bhutan as part of UNDP’s global project Ending GBV and Achieving the SDGs. • Implementing Partner : NCWC • Stakeholders / Steering Committee: RBP, Mo. E, Mo. H, Thimphu Thromde, RENEW , Nazhoen Lamtoen
PROJECT DETAILS • based on the model called “partners for prevention” (P 4 P), • two-pronged approach, targeting caregivers and adolescents. • focus of the project are adolescents (13 -15 years) as they are transitioning from childhood to adulthood, a vulnerable and explorative stage. • Critical time to influence ideas, attitudes, decision making skills, behaviors and practices. • long tern impact in preventing violence. • Sessions topics on gender equality and power, sex and relationships, impacts of violent relationships, coping with stress and keeping healthy, peer pressure and learning to say no to drugs to alcohol, etc. • Through social innovation camps work on social challenges afflicting their communities and develop a plan to address them, which the project supports in implementation • Parallel workshops with caregivers
