Understanding the Teen Brain How does the brain
Understanding the Teen Brain How does the brain work? How does that impact my life?
Introduction & Background
DAY 1: BRAIN STRUCTURE & FUNCTION What do different parts of the brain do?
What do we think we know/ have heard about the brain?
What are you curious about?
Brains Across Species
Three areas of the brain that developed through evolution
Reptilian: Brainstem & Cerebellum • Oldest part of brain • Survival functions (breathing, temp) • Movement (balance)
Limbic System: Internal Structures Emotions & Memories
Neocortex: Outer lobes Higher-order thinking, logic, analysis, language
Cortical Folding
Connection between hemispheres Corpus Callosum
Olfactory Bulbs Human vs. Dog
What do you predict is most different about human & animal brains?
Let’s examine them!
Short break
Lobes of the Brain *Each hemisphere contains one of each
Lobes of the Brain Parietal lobe: processing touch & pain, integrating sensory info Frontal lobe: planning, problem-solving, judgment, motor function Temporal lobe: memory & emotions, auditory processing, comprehending language Occipital lobe: Vision Cerebellum & Brainstem: regulation of breathing, movement, temperature
Guess That Lobe! This part of the brain helps you move, Without it you couldn’t bust a groove. You need it to be able to walk, And coordinate your muscles to be able to talk. Can you guess what part of the brain this is?
Write your own poem! • Write a brief poem about a lobe of the brain • Include examples of functions the lobe controls • Don’t use the name of the lobe – have the class guess it!
Reflection Time Think about what you did and learned today. • What does that make you think? • Where do you feel confused? • What are you still curious to learn more about?
