Overview w The content of the course has not changed w Content previously only assessed in the units is now included in the course assessment w The question paper has been restructured and the weighting reduced to 23% of the overall course assessment w The weighting of the practical assessment components has increased to 77% of the overall course assessment

Course structure The course structure comprises of three components marked out of 260 w Component 1: Question paper – 60 marks (23%) w Component 2: Expressive portfolio – 100 marks (38. 5%) w Component 3: Design portfolio – 100 marks (38. 5%)

Component 1: Question paper

Component 1: Question paper The structure of the question paper has changed w 12 questions are split equally between: – Section 1: Expressive art studies – Section 2: Designs studies w Candidates attempt one mandatory question and two optional questions in each section; a total of six questions across the paper

Question paper: Time allocation w The overall number of marks available for the question paper is unchanged and remains at 60 w The time allocation for the question paper is also unchanged and remains at 2 hours

Question paper: Mandatory questions w Questions 1 and 7 are mandatory questions which should be attempted by all candidates w Candidates are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of one artwork and one design previously studied on the course w Mandatory questions are worth up to 10 marks each

Mandatory questions: Structure w Candidates are asked to select an artwork and design they have studied w Each mandatory question contains three prompts which candidates must explain in the context of their selected artwork or design w Two prompts sample knowledge and understanding of specific art and design issues and the third prompt asks candidates to explain the impact of external influences on the artwork or design

Question paper: Optional image questions w Questions 2 -6 and 8 -12 are optional questions, each containing an unseen image w Candidates are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of art and design practice and issues within the context of previously unseen images w Image questions are worth up to 10 marks each w Candidates attempt two optional questions in each section; a total of four across the paper

Optional image questions: Structure w Each question contains an image. These represent different art and design areas and a range of techniques and processes w In Section 1: Expressive art studies, candidates can expect to see representations of people, places and objects (or combinations of these) w In Section 2: Design studies, candidates can expect to see graphic design, product design, environmental / architectural / interior design, jewellery design and fashion / textile design

Optional image questions: Structure (cont) w Each question requires candidates to analyse an image w Three prompts are given to direct candidates to respond on specific art and design elements within the work w To gain marks, candidates are required to fully justify points made w Candidates should write balanced answers, responding to all three prompts

Question paper: Preparing candidates w The course specification document contains: – examples of question paper prompts – examples of social, cultural and other influences which impact on artists’ and designers’ work and practice w The specimen question paper and marking instructions will be published by September 2018

Components 2 and 3: Expressive and Design portfolios

Expressive and Design portfolios w The removal of unit assessment has led to amendments to the Portfolio Assessment tasks w Investigation and initial development previously assessed in the units is now included in the portfolios w Marking instructions have been restructured

Expressive and Design portfolios (cont) w The Portfolio Assessment tasks are set by centres under the conditions specified by SQA w Portfolios are externally marked by SQA

Expressive and Design portfolios (cont) w The portfolio format continues to offer centres flexibility. However, portfolios must: – not be any bigger than three A 2 size, single-sided sheets or equivalent – fold to a size not exceeding A 1 w Work included should not overlap and must occupy its own space in the presentation

Expressive and Design portfolios (cont) The evaluation for each portfolio must: w be completed on the mandatory SQA template w be included within the first sheet of the portfolio w not overlap any other work or extend beyond the three A 2 sheets (or equivalent)

Expressive and Design portfolios: Preparing candidates Expressive and Design Portfolio Assessment tasks are published on the SQA website. These contain: w Instructions for teachers and lecturers w Marking instructions w Instructions for candidates

Portfolios: Marking instructions w The marking instructions for both the expressive and design portfolios have been restructured to reflect the intentions of the revised assessment tasks w The marking instructions for each portfolio contain three sections: Section 1 – Process (40 marks) Section 2 – Skills (50 marks) Section 3 – Evaluation (10 marks)

Expressive Portfolio Assessment task The Expressive Portfolio Assessment task requires candidates to: w select a theme / stimulus w produce relevant 2 D / 3 D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research w demonstrate a single line of development w produce a final piece w evaluate their creative process

Expressive Portfolio: Process Candidates are assessed on their ability to: w produce relevant and focused 2 D / 3 D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to their theme or stimulus and their line of development (10 marks) w demonstrate a single line of focused development, showing visual continuity, the refinement of one idea and produce a final piece (30 marks)

Expressive Portfolio: Skills Candidates are assessed on their ability to creatively and skilfully: w use appropriate materials, techniques and/or technology for visual effect in response to their theme or stimulus (25 marks) w use appropriate visual elements and expressive effects in response to their theme or stimulus (25 marks)

Expressive Portfolio: Evaluation Candidates are assessed on their ability to: w give a justified critical evaluation of the effectiveness of decisions made and the visual qualities of their expressive portfolio, with reference to their theme or stimulus (10 marks)

Design Portfolio Assessment task The Design Portfolio Assessment task requires candidates to: w select a design brief w produce relevant 2 D / 3 D investigative material and market research w demonstrate a single line of development w produce a design solution w evaluate their design process

Design Portfolio: Process Candidates are assessed on their ability to: w produce and compile relevant and focused 2 D / 3 D investigative material and market research appropriate to their design brief / design area and their line of development (10 marks) w demonstrate a single line of focused development showing visual continuity, the refinement of one idea and produce a design solution (30 marks)

Design Portfolio: Skills Candidates are assessed on their ability to creatively and skilfully: w use appropriate materials, techniques and/or technology for aesthetic and functional effect in response to their design brief / design area (25 marks) w demonstrate understanding of appropriate design elements in response to their design brief / design area requirements (25 marks)

Design Portfolio: Evaluation Candidates are assessed on their ability to: w give a justified critical evaluation of the effectiveness of decisions and the aesthetic and functional qualities of their design portfolio with reference to their design brief / design area (10 marks)

Portfolios: Submission Expressive and design portfolios are uplifted at the end of April and are marked separately: w Expressive and design portfolios must be packaged separately for uplift w Separate attendance registers (Ex 6 forms) will be provided
