Understanding Performance Tasks
Definition • A performance task requires students to demonstrate that they have mastered specific skills and competencies by performing or producing a paper or product.
Performance Tasks are found on the Smarter Balanced Assessment but are not limited to that format • Review the SBA Performance Task Characteristics on page 4 of the Performance Task Specifications • http: //www. smarterbalanced. org/wordpress/wpcontent/uploads/2012/05/Task. Item. Specifications/Performance. Tasks. Specifications. pdf
Performance Tasks challenge students at all quadrants of the Rigor and Relevance Framework • http: //www. leadered. com/ourphilosophy/rigor-relevance-framework. php
For Migrant Summer School, our performance tasks will have the student • • Form a question (given) Search for information (given) Make sense of it Synthesize and communicate what they learn
Compare this with research in academic, career, and life applications • • We have a question We search for information We make sense of that information We communicate what we have found
Let’s look at the verbs • • We have a question We search for information We make sense of that information We communicate what we have found
Because these are important life skills, we find them in the Common Core and, therefore, in the Smarter Balanced Claims • CCSS ELA Anchor Standards • SBA Claims
How do these tasks also address the CCSS capacities • p. 7 http: //www. corestandards. org/wpcontent/uploads/ELA_Standards. pdf
These tasks will also build student technology skills by • Using online video and research resources for students to gather the information • Have options of student products that use technology
These performance tasks will also • Build on an element of the STEM activities • Be fun!
