Understanding Laws Constitution establish the rule of law. All persons are equal before the law. No one is above the law. Any violation of law (crime) has a specific punishment.
Do Laws Apply to All?
Laws in ancient India Different communities, different laws. Sometimes, the punishment varied depending on their caste backgrounds, with lower castes being more harshly penalised.
Arbitrary laws during British period - Sedition Act of 1870. Any person protesting or criticising the British government could be arrested without due trial.
Hindu Succession Amendment Act 2005. According to this new law, sons, daughters and their mothers can get an equal share of family property.
How Do New Laws Come About? An important role of Parliament is to be sensitive to the problems faced by people.

Unpopular and Controversial Laws Sometimes laws passed by Parliament turns out to be unpopular. Its constitutionally valid and hence legal, but it can continue to be unpopular and unacceptable to people because they feel that the intention behind it is unfair and harmful.
