Parallels of latitude are the parallel lines running horizontally across a map or globe. The Equator is at 0°. Parallels of latitude are used to determine the north-south position of a place. 3 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
Meridians of longitude are the long lines running vertically down a map or globe, from pole to pole. The Prime Meridian is at 0º. Meridians of longitude are used to determine the east-west position of a place. 4 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
Hemispheres The equator is the parallel of latitude that separates the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere. The Eastern and Western Hemisphere are separated by the Prime Meridian (0 ) and the International Date Line (180 ). The International Date line is the meridian of longitude opposite the Prime Meridian. 5 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
Degrees Latitude is measured in degrees, numbered from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the North Pole and 90° at the South Pole. 6 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
Degrees Longitude is also measured in degrees, numbered from 0° to 180° east to the International Date Line and 0° to 180° west to the International Date Line. 7 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
North and South Degrees of latitude north of the Equator are labelled with an N. Degrees of latitude south of the Equator are labelled with an S. 8 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
East and West Degrees of longitude east of the Prime Meridian are labelled with an E. Degrees of longitude west of the Prime Meridian are labelled with a W. 9 of 12 Geo_Y 06_U 1_SS_Understand. Lat. Long
