What Is a Stereotype? • a widely held but fixed and oversimplified often over exaggerated image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. • Where do we see stereotypes? • Where do you think they come from?
Prejudice • Stereotypes are not so bad, until you pre-judge someone and react according to your pre-judgement • Prejudice: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. • When we actively respond to stereotypes we become prejudice • Ex: avoiding select groups like “abnormal” fruit
Power • Prejudice isn’t very harmful until a power struggle is established. • Power: the ability to do something or act in a particular way; agency • Agency: the ability to make your own free choices, to act independently • Social Power: the authority to control the self, goals, and often others
How Do You Understand Power • • In groups discuss what power is Where have you experienced it being used What is your reaction to power Do you have any power
