UNDERSTANDING DESIGN Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawing, business process, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns). Another definition for design is a roadmap or a strategic approach for someone to achieve a unique expectation.

CONT… Industrial Design Industrial design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer.

CONT… Product Design Product design is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business to its customers. It is the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products.

CONT… Process design The activity of determining the workflow, equipment needs, and implementation requirements for particular process. Process a design typically uses a number of tools including flowcharting, process simulation software, and scale models.

TEXTURE Texture is another element of fashion design. Can be achieved by the materials used: sequins, stones, lace, trims, etc. Or by the fabric & pattern: satin, silk, polyester, plaids, stripes, shapes, manipulation of fabric etc.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Although all designs incorporate the components or elements of fashion design, the principles of fashion design -- its guiding rules or fundamentals -govern whether or not a particular design is successful and aesthetically pleasing.

CONT… Techniques to add emphasis on a garment may include the addition of embellishment, cut-outs, ruffles, peplums, and so on. Use of color and its placement is another way to create emphasis.

CONT… Balance is the sense of evenly distributed weight. Variations of the use of the elements, the depth of a texture, the size and placement of a shape, the orientation or width of a line,

CONT. . Formal Balance = symmetrical balance Occurs when each element on one side has a counterpart on the other. Provides a sense of dignity, restraint, conservatism and formality.

CONT… Informal Balance = asymmetrical balance When the elements on the design vary in line, shape, texture or color.

PROPORTION Proportion in fashion design is the principle that holds that the size of various components of a garment or fashion accessory must look good together. For instance size relationship between the bodice and skirt or bodice to sleeve length.

UNITY When the principle of unity in fashion design is applied well, a garment or fashion accessory should look good overall. It should look as though it goes together, and it should look as though all the design elements are contributing to make a harmonious whole. If too many elements with in the design are similar, it becomes boring.

RHYTHM What moves the eye from the point of contact throughout the rest of the design. This can occur through the use of the elements of design. It can also be through construction techniques such as pleating, gathers, etc.
