Understanding Computer Systems 8. Designing Data-Capture forms
Today’s Learning Objective • “Learn how to design a good datacapture form. ” • Write the lesson Learning Objective onto your Self-Assessment Sheet. Understanding Computer 18 January 2022
Learning Outcomes • All students must be able to design a simple (E / D) data capture form to obtain specific information. • Most students will be able to design a complete and well thought out (C) data capture form designed to gather a range of information. • Some students will be able to code information (B / A) for use in a spreadsheet or database. Questions • In a conversation, when completing a research survey, being interviewed for a job or working on a homework assignment, you might find yourself presented with a series of closedended or open-ended questions. Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Questioning - Types Open-ended questions • What are open questions? • Open-ended questions are ones that require more than one word answers. The answers could come in the form of a list, a few sentences or something longer such as a speech, paragraph or essay. Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Questioning - Types Open-ended questions Here are some examples of open-ended questions: • What are you planning to buy today at the supermarket? • What is your favourite memory from childhood? • How will you help the company if you are hired to work for us? Questioning - Types Closed-ended questions • What are closed-ended questions? • If you can answer a question with only a "yes" or "no" response, then you are answering a close-ended type of question. Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Questioning - Types Closed-ended questions Examples of close-ended questions are: • Are you feeling better today? • May I use the bathroom? • Were you planning on becoming a fireman? • Should I date him? Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Questioning - Types • Close-ended questions should not always be thought of as simple questions that anyone can quickly answer merely because they require a yes or no answer. Close-ended questions can also be very complicated. For example, "Is 1 in binary equal to 1 in counting numbers? " is a close-ended question that not everyone would be able to quickly answer. When These Questions Are Used Summary “Close-ended questions: multiple choice questions on a school exam, yes/no. Pick from a list” Understanding Computer “Open-ended questions: short responses and essay questions on an exam. Any response allowed. ” “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Data Capture forms • You will design and create a suitable data capture form to capture information on the favourite movies, TV shows, actors, actresses, music artists and/or groups and songs, of 10 other pupils in the class. • Multiple choice questionnaires (closed questions) should be used. Task A – Closed Question Example Which of the following movies do you like the most? • The Lord of the Rings • Avatar • Twilight • Harry Potter Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Task B – Coding information for use • Now we must identify how to use the information we have collected. • How can we code the information in order to make use of it? Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Task B – Coding information for use • Firstly, we tally the number of responses each option received from the 10 people who were asked! • • The Lord of the Rings Avatar Twilight Harry Potter Understanding Computer 5 5 out of 10 = 50% 2 2 out of 10 = 20% 0 0 out of 10 = 0% 3 3 out of 10 = 30% “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Task B – Coding information for use • Now tally up the number of responses each of the answers to your questions received! Extension • Can you calculate the percentage of responses to each question. Use a spreadsheet formula to help speed up your calculations. Understanding Computer “Learn how to design a good data-capture form. ” LO
Today’s Learning Objective • “Learn how to design a good datacapture form. ” • Put , or onto your Self Assessment sheet to show whether or not you have achieved today’s learning objective. Understanding Computer 18 January 2022
