UNCLASSIFIED Background • Ontario decided to adopt the National Fire Protection Association Standards in May 2012 • OFMEM conducted a review of the Ontario Standards to determine how to transition from the Ontario Fire Services Standards to the NFPA standards • Letters of Compliance with NFPA Standards were offered to each municipal fire department that applied and fulfilled the requirements based on education, training or experience. • The Grandfathering process was based on the approval of the Fire Chief Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services
UNCLASSIFIED Current Status • Applications were received from 373 Fire Departments • 350 Departments have been provided with a Letter of Compliance and a spreadsheet outlining the details of the Applications • 23 Departments were randomly selected for an Audit and have been notified • Details of the Audit process are being finalized Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services 4
UNCLASSIFIED Current Status • The data entry component of the Grandfathering Project is now complete • IFSAC Seals and Pro. Board Applications are not available for the NFPA Grandfathering Program • Personnel who choose to pursue NFPA Certification, will have to fulfil all the requirements of the standard Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services
UNCLASSIFIED Next Steps • Fire Departments are to review the information for errors and omissions and inform the OFMEM in writing • Integration of Certification and Grandfathering Databases upon verification of data • A Fire Marshal’s Communique and supporting resources have been drafted. They consist of – Fire Marshal’s Communique – Frequently Asked Questions and Answers – Template Letter for use by the Fire Chief for Fire Department Personnel • Distribution is planned for June 2016 Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services
