UKish Student magazines MAGAZINE 1 A periodical publication
UK(ish) Student magazines MAGAZINE '1. A periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, typically covering a particular subject. ' Brett Whittaker
Cover Analysis The cover itself is fairly busy with lots of strap lines on both sides of the page suggesting that the magazine has a niche audience and is trying to be attractive to the broader market by advertising a variety of its articles on its cover. The masthead is the largest piece of text, it is brightly coloured, making a stark contrast to the darker colours in the cover image. The masthead however is layered under and is partially covered by the image, implying that the image is the most important aspect of the cover. The face of the person is the centre of visual interest due to the highlights and it being above all of the other features. Because of this it can be inferred that the subject of the image is important; possibly being famous or influential to the targeted audience. The strap lines alternate in colour (white and green) and get smaller the closer they are to the bottom of the page. They are also followed by a small white flavour text expanding on the topic of the cover line. The main cover line is only slighter larger and follows the same structure as the other strap lines. The 'splat' boost on the right hand side is in a totally different colour and font to the rest of the magazine, it also has a bright pink paint splatter behind it. This contrast makes the boost one of the first things that is actually read on the cover, this may have been done as the boost references the popular activity paint balling, potentially attracting more readers.
Background/Purpose The Ellowes Hall newsletter is a magazine given to all students of its school and sixth form on a term to term basis. It mostly covers the events students have taken part in or important information for parents. It Is given free to all students and primarily intended for the parents of the students that attend. Unlike the other magazines which have around a hundred pages the 'newsletter' typically has less than ten which makes its cover quite unique. Cover Analysis The cover is fairly busy, while selling copies isn't a concern for this magazine its limiting size means it has to fit an article on its cover, explaining its almost cluttered look. There is a banner covering the top third of the cover with a dark blue background and the schools insignia in the top right. This large masthead makes the magazine very easy to identify and visually appealing, inviting it to be read. The colour scheme is also complicated compared to the three or so colours of 'College Lifestyle. ' This cover has a whole host of colours mainly to differentiate between important articles. The green article on the cover is immediately distinguishable due to the large contrast in colour. The Ellowes Hall newsletter has many more images than the other two covers. The school logo for example is used for identification, both students and parents can see it and know what their looking at right away. The small image of the headteacher is used to add personality to the cover article making his words more empathetical. The three winter scenes on the left third is possibly an ambiguous article to make the cover both visually pleasing but also a news piece covering how the winter hit the school. The footer of the magazine is effectively a puff piece being filled with the schools accolades.
Background The national student (TNS) is a free, monthly magazine aimed at students in higher education. Their main focus is on entertainment with articles on films and music. One hundred thousand copies are distributed monthly across many universities across the UK; as well as an interactive version being available online. Cover Analysis This cover is quite simple, with one image and a simple colour scheme of just white and orange which makes the text leap off the greys and browns of the image. The masthead for 'TNS' is small compared to most magazine covers, with it being smaller than the main cover line and only covering the left third rather than the width of the page. The masthead is in a white box that covers the image, opposed to being behind the image like 'College lifestyle. ' implying that 'TNS' are trying to create some brand recognition with their magazine. The image is a screen shot from a popular film series that not only a gives an instantly recognisable character to attract readers, but the image itself has a sense of perspective that pulls the eye in due to the bright bloom effect in the far background. The main cover line is very large, covering the full width of the cover. 'Hot summer films' explains the cover image but, like the other strap lines, offers no further text to expand on the topic. Due to the magazine being free, this may have been done to encourage people to pick up
Contents This is the contents page from the same edition of TNS seen previously. Surprisingly the actually contents is fairly small with the majority of the page being a standfirst. The page uses a screen shot from the same film as the cover to further the 'hot summer films' theme from. It also uses a similar colour scheme and identical font as the cover as well, using alternating orange and black for the contents itself. This is done to keep a consistent feel though the magazine.
