UI FRAMEWORK &INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE Allison Bloodworth Bernie Geuy
OUR GOAL Our goal is to organize and structure the information in Cal. Central to ensure users are able to find what they need when they need it. We are thinking about users' experience when they come to the initial landing page, potential methods of navigating through the system, how users may use search, and where courses and various campus systems might be exposed. We are also considering how the timeline affects what students need to see a particular time (e. g. based on year in school and time of the year). If we have time, we may also think about how to decide which of these Integration Strategies to apply to campus services.
THINGS TO WORK ON Drafting a navigation schema Thinking about public & authenticated views Landing page is important Thinking about where all Berkeley services should live in Cal. Central Thinking about how to provide a seamless migration from My. Berkeley. App
DESIGN GOALS Get students to the info they need when they need it Don’t overwhelm Logical organization structure (info architecture) Clear delineation (e. g. social vs. academic) Prompt/push campus critical notifications Know me & present info relevant to me when I need it Context-sensitive, knows my status Simple, & clean A la Course Rank & Class Owl
DESIGN GOALS Future-friendly Think differently about how we deliver student services Start fresh Organize by functional need (vs. by our org structure) Support workflow & tie together related activities E. g. Financial aid, bill paying, CARS Speak the user’s language Navigation should have “scent”
ISSUES & CHALLENGES Policy - how do we decide: who gets to speak to users? how will their content be placed on the screen? How to get others on board Develop widgets? Other ways to contribute content (e. g. pages, feeds)?
OUR PROCESS Look at different portal examples for inspiration
OUR PROCESS Interviews and card sorts with 6 students “Affinity diagramming” & looking for patterns
NAVIGATION/TAXONOMY DECISIONS Navigation - do we follow current paradigms or do something completely new? Tabs or nav bar for top nav? How many levels of navigation? Should we have a left nav with an accordion? How do the feeds play in? Search Recommendations

IDEAS FOR TODAY Brainstorm about your ideal online student experience at Berkeley How would you want the online tools to interact with you? Create scenarios Journey maps to help us understand at what time of year students are doing what Analyze card sort results What are the missing information items? How many categories do we need? What are some potential categories?
