UCSC – GREEN CAMPUS PROGRAM Throughout the UCSC campus and Santa Cruz communities, GCP interns strive to personally and institutionally: • Outreach to students, staff, faculty, stakeholders & local community members • Research & educate about energy efficiency, water conservation & environmental impacts • Raise the collective Santa Cruz eco-consciousness & encourage easy energy & water saving practices • Promote efficient operational & technological purchases & usage • Create fun, engaging & informative events & marketing materials • Measure & summarize project successes
PROJECTS In addition to implementing the successful “Change a Light Change the World” CFL Giveaway Campaign, the UCSC Green Campus interns worked on a variety of other energy efficiency projects. Including: – Peer-to-Peer Energy Conservation – Mock Energy Statements – Fume Hood Sash Campaign

CFL CAMPAIGN GOALS • Distribute up to 5, 000 bulbs in October • Host multiple CFL giveaway tabling events • Outreach & educate UCSC community about CFL: – Uses – Energy efficiency and savings – Recycling

5 STEPS TO A GREAT CAMPAIGN 1. Plan ahead • • Give at least 2 -4 weeks for long-term campaign planning Give all parties involved plenty of lead time 2. Division of labor • • Divide giveaway events by designated areas Have same interns do events in the same area 3. Media outreach • Fliers, email, newspapers, etc. 4. Consistent and strong communication • • • Update and plan with stakeholders Make initial contact, finalize event plans & send reminders! Follow up & thank those involved 5. Target tabling times • Strategic tabling hours

BARRIERS • Not enough lead time for UC policies, procedures & staff • Misunderstandings about the convenience of recycling CFLs on campus • Not enough people power or time in one month to host more events • We didn’t order enough bulbs (not enough supply to meet the demand)! • Difficulty reaching students, staff & faculty across our spread out campus
ACCOMPLISHMENTS In just 1 month, UCSC GCP gave away a total of 3, 225 CFLs! Annual Energy Savings: 196, 564 k. Wh! Annual CO 2 Savings: 132, 320 lbs! 23 tabling events planned & executed Educated students, staff, faculty & administrators Recognition in UCSC Currents
LESSONS LEARNED • Time management - don’t plan too many events • Know the facts about CFLs & local recycling opportunities • Develop a volunteer network • Keep track of all sign-in sheets and bulbs • Build the Green Campus reputation
