U 6: Transformations MG 3. 2 Objective: Students identify translations, reflections, and rotations.

Main Idea • Today, we are going to learn about transformations of graphs. • We are going to see how graphs can be moved or changed, which is a transformation. • There are 3 types.

Type 1: Reflection • A reflection is a flip, or a mirror image of the shape.

Example Reflections • Reflection about the x • Reflection about the y -axis

Objective 1: Recognize Reflections • Determine whether the following are reflections. • Then decide if it reflects over the x-axis or the y-axis.

Practice: Recognize Reflections

Objective 2: Perform Reflections

Objective 2: Perform Reflections A B y Coordinate Notation C x

Type 2: Translation • A translation is when a figure is moved up, down, left, and/or right. • Note that the object doesn’t change size or orientation, it just moves. • Points can be translated or entire figures.

Objective 1: Recognize Translations • Determine if the following is a translation or a reflection. The blue shape is the original. (Translation: it moved, but did not rotate or reflect).

Objective 2: Perform Translations The triangle below is translated 5 units right and 4 units down. Describe the translation below using coordinate notation. D C y Coordinate Notation E +5 -4 x

Type 3: Rotation • A rotation is when a figure does not move or reflect, but simply turns or spins in the same location.

Review 1) What are three types of transformations? 2) What does each one do to the graph?
