Typical Characters in 19 th Century Cartoons The Villain- The Bad Guy. He wears a black hat, beats women and children, steps on kittens and other mean stuff. The Fool- He thinks he’s a good guy, but really he’s kind of an idiot. He wears what he thinks looks like stylish clothing, but he doesn’t wear them right. He tries to save pretty girls, but they can take advantage of him, becahse he isn’t very bright. The Beautiful Girl- She’s Pretty! She’s Helpless! She needs Protecting! The Bad Child- This child does whatever they want, usually getting into some mischief, getting into fights, or otherwise misbehaving and not doing what they are told. The Bad Child tends to be dirty and uneducated too. Often the Bad Child is of an ethnic minority, and can’t do anything for themselves. The Good Child- This child never gets dirty, always does what they are told, and never gets into any trouble. Often the Good Child is educated and White but as a Child they still can’t make decisions or do things for themselves. The Monkey Boy- This was how people in the 19 th Century symbolized anyone they felt was a primitive or less advanced than they were. Often this stereotype was used to represent people of African or Native American decent who were believed to be less capable than whites.
