Active and Passive Voice �Active Voice—The subject of the sentence is carrying out an action on a receiver. EX: The soprano sang at least one tune from a well-known opera. �Passive Voice—The subject of the sentence is having an action carried out on it by a doer. EX: At least one tune from a well-known opera was sang by the soprano. � *Doer, Action, Receiver
Determine if these sentences are Active or Passive. If Passive, change them to Active. �The man must have eaten five hamburgers. �The letter was mailed by Marilyn. �Colorful parrots live in the rainforest. �A suspect was questioned for sixteen hours by the police.
Transitive and Intransitive Verbs �Transitive Verb: Expresses an action that passes from a doer to a receiver (direct object). EX: James hit the ball. �Intransitive Verb: Expresses an action that has no receiver (direct object). EX: The flowers withered over time.
Determine if the verbs are Transitive or Intransitive �She sang a lullaby to the crying baby. �Jim napped on the couch after school. �Larry tripped as he ran around the track. �Jenna carried the bag all over the mall.
