INTRODUCTION • Injections are among the most common health care procedures • At least 16 billion administered in developing and transitional countries each year. • 95% of injections are administered in curative care • 3% are for immunization, and the rest for other purposes like blood transfusions

COURSE OBJECTIVES • After successfully completing this class you will be able to: • Describe the different types of syringes. • Use different types of needles as per patient’s unique need • Recognize different types of IV cannula and butterfly needles and their usage. •

SYRINGE A tube with a nozzle and piston or bulb for sucking in and ejecting liquid in a thin stream. v Used for cleaning wounds or body cavities. v Fitted with a hollow needle for injecting or withdrawing fluids . v Syringes are frequently used in clinical medicine to administer injections, infuse intravenous therapy into the bloodstream, apply compounds such as glue or lubricant, and draw/measure liquids

SYRINGE • The word 'gauge' rhymes with 'cage' and tells how thick a needle is. • Depending on the needle length you choose, you might also have a choice of gauge. • The higher the gauge, the thinner the needle. • For example, a 31 gauge needle is thinner than a 29 gauge needle.

V CANNULA v A device used to draw blood and give treatments, including intravenous fluids, drugs, or blood transfusions. v A thin, flexible tube is inserted into a vein, usually in the back of the hand, the lower part of the arm, or the foot. v A needle is inserted into a vein to draw blood or give fluids.
