Exchange • When a person, group, or societies interact to receive a reward or a return for their actions • Rewards can be material or non-material. • Ex. dating, friendship, family life • Reciprocity - if I do this for you, what are you going to do for me?
Exchange Theory • People are motivated by self-interests in their interactions with others. • People do things for the rewards. • Behavior that is rewarded is repeated.
Competition • When two or more persons or groups compete to obtain a goal that only one can attain. • If everyone follows the rules, competition is a means of motivating people.
Conflict • The deliberate attempt to control by force, oppose, harm, or resist the will of another person. • No rules are followed. • Ex. War, silent treatment of friend, … • Conflict can be useful because it reinforces group boundaries and strengthens group loyalty.
Cooperation • When two or more people or groups work together to achieve a goal that will benefit many people. • Cooperation often is used along with other forms of interaction.
