Locating and retrieving/what evidence does the writer use… • Read question carefully • Work through text methodically – highlight/underline • Make your points in your answer in this order too • Use only relevant points • Give more examples than asked (if time) • If it says ‘list, ’ list; if it doesn’t, don’t

Explain • Stay in sequence • Use short, embedded quotations • Inference • Use your own words • PEE

Impressions • Try to make about 4/5 separate points – there will be more than one impression to comment on – use your own words to describe the impresssion • Work through the text methodically • Use the wording of the question in your answer • Use short quotations to illustrate points • Explain how the impression is created through language i. e. negative or positive vocabulary • PEE

Viewpoint and attitude/thoughts and feelings • Answer the question • Try to make about 5 clear, separate points • Support points with short embedded quotations • Explain how the attitude is revealed through language • PEE

Intended audience (who) • Find more than one audience (4 or 5) • Comment on primary audience first and then secondary audiences • Do not say it is for ‘everyone’!! • Use evidence to support your ideas • Explain how the text targets the audience – presentation and language • PEE

Analysis of persuasive technique (how) MOVE FROM LONG-SHOT TO CLOSE-UP • Tone (formal/informal, serious/light-hearted, sarcastic, ridiculing, humorous, colloquial/conversational) • Tactics (scare, shock, appeals to sense of ambition, snobbery, better nature, self-image) • Techniques: CRAPPSFOREST (counter-argument, rhetorical questions, anecdote, first, second, third person pronouns, imperatives, lists and triples, simile/metaphor, adjectives, degree adverbs, senses, negative or positive vocab, statistics, facts and opinions, exaggeration, emotive, structure • Presentational features Explain the effect on the reader of each device you mention

TIMING Use your time carefully • 1 hour to read 2 texts and answer 4 questions: • 10 mins reading • 12 mins per question (x 4) • 2 mins checking
