Types of Production There are three types of production: • Primary • Secondary • Tertiary
Primary Production • Involves using the earth’s natural resources, this may include: – Extraction (taking) of raw materials from the land or sea – Growing items eg fruit, trees • Examples include farming, fishing, mining, forestry and oil drilling
Secondary Production • Involves taking raw materials and turning them into finished and semi-finished products • Secondary involves manufacturing and construction • Examples include building and construction, coach building and baking
Tertiary Production • This involves providing services to consumers or to other businesses • Examples include: – Retailing – Banking – Hairdressing – Insurance – Health care

Trends in UK and Ireland • The importance of each sector can be measured by the number of people employed: – About 2% of workers are employed in primary production – About 22% of workers are employed in secondary production – About 76% of workers are employed in tertiary production
