Types of Poetry • Acrostic Poem In this poem, certain letters of the lines usually the first letters form a word or message that relates to the subject. • Concrete Poem A type of poetry that uses some sort of visual presentation to enhance the effect of the poem on the reader. The visual layout of the poem need not necessarily form a picture, although many concrete poems do. • Cinquain Poem This poem consists of five unrhymed lines. It has one word on the first line, two words on the second line, three on the third, four on the fourth, and one on the last. The last line usually refers back to or restates the first.

Types of Poetry • Haiku This form of Japanese poetry is composed of three unrhymed lines in a 5 -7 -5 syllabic meter (pattern). The first line has five syllables, the second seven syllables, and the last five syllables. This poem captures a moment in nature (or in life) and “freezes” it as a photo with specific language. Tanka This form of Japanese poetry similar to haiku that also usually focuses on nature. It uses a five-line syllabic meter. Line 1: 5 syllables Line 2: 7 Line 3 : 5 Line 4: 7 Line 5: 7

Free Verse Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry

Free Verse Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms. Such poems are without rhythms and rhyme schemes; do not follow regular rhyme scheme rules and still provide artistic expression. In this way, the poet can give his own shape to a poem how he/she desires. However, it still allows poets to use alliteration, rhyme, cadences or rhythms to get the effects that they consider are suitable for the piece. Features of Free Verse • Free verse poems have no regular meter and rhythm. • They do not follow a proper rhyme scheme as such; these poems do not have any set rules. • This type of poem is based on normal pauses and natural rhythmical phrases as compared to the artificial constraints of normal poetry.
